Shared iPad Max users and storage usage

When setting up a Shared iPad DEP Profile, you must specify the maximum number of users it can support. A best practice is to add two to the planned number of individuals that you expect to use a device throughout a given school week.

Note: It is recommended that you keep this setting as low as possible to allow for optimal storage space  and faster login experience.

The maximum number of users divides the local storage on the iPad evenly for that number of users. These storage spaces can be reused as necessary. For example, if the iPad is set up for five users and a sixth user signs in, data is removed for the user who logged in first. If the first user signs in to the same iPad again, their data must be downloaded again.

After iOS is installed, a Shared iPad reserves at least the following amount of space:

  • Devices with 32 GB storage capacity: 10 GB system, 8 GB apps and media, 1 GB minimum per user

  • Devices with 64 GB storage capacity or more: 10 GB system, 16 GB apps and media, 2 GB minimum per user

For example, if you specify a maximum of 4 users on a 32 GB iPad, each user has approximately 3.5 GB of local storage. On a 64 GB iPad, the same number of users would receive 9.5 GB of local storage.

Caching server

The caching server is extremely important for Shared iPad. If the caching server is configured to cache iCloud data (including iCloud Photo Library and CloudKit-enabled apps), Shared iPad saves data to the caching server, which uploads that data to iCloud. When a student’s data is cached by the caching server, Shared iPad can download the data locally, instead of from iCloud. 

NOTE: Shared iPad requires a mobile management device (MDM) solution and Managed Apple IDs. Shared iPad is supported on iPad Pro (9.7-inch and 12.9-inch), iPad 5th generation or later, iPad Air 2 or later, and iPad mini 4 or later. Devices must have at least 32 GB of storage and be supervised.
